Galaad – Paradis Posthumes

Review: Erik Neuteboom

Swiss five-piece formation Galaad was founded in 1998, released the albums Premier Février in 1992 and Vae Victis in 1996 but one year later Galaad disbanded. In 2016 the band reformed and in 2019 released its third effort entitled Frat3r, with the original line-up from the Nineties, as a five-piece formation. My conclusion about this album was “If you are up to French vocals and strong Neo-prog hints, this is an album to discover.”

In comparison with the previous album Galaad sound less Neo-Prog inspired (only the wonderful song Jour sidéral is obviously early Marillion rooted), and presents more own musical ideas, I notice a stunning progress! Most of the 11 tracks still alternate between mellow and bombastic but are more elaborate and compelling.

The focus is on the strong French vocals (powerful and emotional, at some moments theatrical) and the excellent guitar work: often harder-edged (lots of heavy runs and biting wah-wah), but also twanging and fragile in the mellow moments. I love the howling runs in the compelling composition Divine, what a great build-up and grand finale! And the titletrack delivers a swinging rhythm, embellished with melancholical vocals and a fiery guitar solo.

The keyboards are less omnipresent, but varied and tasteful: from spacey synthesizer flights and a Mellotron choir sound to tender piano and even an exciting interlude with sequencing, in the strong composition Ton Ennemi. A good example of the many interesting own musical ideas on this new album. If you are up to the strong emotional undertones in the French language (like Ange, Mona Lisa, Versailles) this is a captivating album (loaded with emotion and tension) to check out.
