Perfect Storm – No Air

This is an experienced six-piece formation from Groningen, the very nothern part of The Netherlands, presenting an interesting debut album. From the very first moment I am impressed, these musicians succeed to keep my attention delivering eclectic and dynamic music, with lots of captivating ideas. On one hand Perfect Storm sounds very melodic, accessible and song-oriented, like radio friendly rock. On the other hand this band frequently puts surprising shifting moods, breaks and instrumental parts into the seven compositions (between 6 and 10 minutes), an interesting musical approach, in the tradition of genuine progressive rock.

My highlights.

Vocal harmonies, fat sequencing and a fiery guitar solo with Hammond waves in Strength.

From a slow rhythm to a spectacular bombastic part, embellished with strong work on guitar and keyboards in Sun For Life.

The titletrack is a wonderful ballad, it starts and ends with dreamy female vocals, in between sumptuous keyboards.

The most dynamic track is Mind’s Eye with a swinging rhythm, the powerful vocals, rock guitar and Hammond reminds me of Kansas.

And finally How It Ends, it sounds very alternating. From a slow rhythm with distorted vocals to a mid-tempo with powerful vocals, and rock guitar. From halfway mellow with piano and vocals to finally an atmospheric part (like post rock), culminating in bombastic eruption with heavy guitar solo, wow, what a variety and dynamics, topped with excellent work on guitar.

This is a very promising band, I am already looking forward to Perfect Storm its next effort!
